Swearing Allegiance to Muhammad:-

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.17        Narrated byUbada bin As Samit
who took part in the battle of Badr and was a Naqib (a person heading a group of six persons), on the night of Al-'Aqaba pledge: Allah's Apostle said while a group of his companions were around him, "Swear allegiance to me for:

1.Not to join anything in worship along with Allah.

2.Not to steal.

3.Not to commit illegal sexual intercourse.

4.Not to kill your children.

5.Not to accuse an innocent person (to spread such an accusation among people).

6.Not to be disobedient (when ordered) to do good deed."

The Prophet added: "Whoever among you fulfills his pledge will be rewarded by Allah. And whoever indulges in any one of them (except the ascription of partners to Allah) and gets the punishment in this world, that punishment will be an expiation for that sin. And if one indulges in any of them, and Allah conceals his sin, it is up to Him to forgive or punish him (in the Hereafter)." 'Ubada bin As-Samit added: "So we swore allegiance for these." (points to Allah's Apostle)

*** Hitler who studied religious beliefs, used this process of 'personalised' allegiance with the elite of his followers, just like Muhammad ***

The following report is from Ibn Ishaq's 'Sirat Rasool'Allah', The biography of Muhammad:

In the tenth year of his mission (620 AD), Muhammad met six people from Yathrib who had come for the annual rites of pilgrimage at ‘Aqaba (near Mina in Makkah). They listened to him earnestly, learnt about Allah  and his revelations, and immediately recognized him as the prophet mentioned in Jewish scriptures as told by their fellow Jewish citizens. (In times of serious discussions with the Arabs, the Jews of Yathrib used to talk about the coming of a prophet who will lead them to security and dominion in the land.).

All six people from Yathrib accepted Islam. They pledged an oath of allegiance to Muhammad and promised to return the next year with more people. Upon their return to Yathrib they described the prophet to the people and soon he became the talk of the town. The following year twelve more men came for the annual rites of pilgrimage and all accepted Islam. The terms of the pledge, known as the First Pledge of ‘Aqaba, included the following:

We shall not associate anyone with Allah: whether in worship, His attributes, His power or His authority.
We shall not indulge in adultery, fornication, and practice or propagate any other indecency.
We shall not steal or rob anyone’s property in any manner or under any pretense.
We shall not practice the custom of killing children.
We shall not falsely accuse or backbite anyone.
We shall not disobey you in good deeds and just cause.
We shall always follow you, be it hard or easy, to our liking or not, and we shall act according to your commands. We shall follow and obey your decisions even if it be against ourselves and in favor of others.
We shall not participate in opposing the deserving persons of authority or positions.
We shall support the truth and justice and stand firm under all circumstances. In matters of Allah’s religion, we shall not be afraid for our name, disrepute, disgrace, or blame.

After concluding this pledge, the prophet (pbuh) said: “If you fully comply with these promises, you will have the right to paradise; but if you fault, you will not have the right to paradise. Allah may punish you or He may forgive you.”

Ibn Ishaq said: The Pledge of War took place after Allah had given permission to His Messenger, upon him be peace, to wage war. It comprised conditions other than those which he had laid down in the first `Aqaba Pledge. The first pledge was in the manner of the Pledge of Women because Allah had not then given permission to His Messenger, upon him be peace, to wage war.

When Allah gave permission to wage it, and the Messenger of Allah, upon him be peace, then took the pledge in the last 'Aqaba for waging war on any of his persecutors [lit. on people be they red or black] he took conditions for himself [i.e. for his protection] and took further conditions from those people for [obedience to] his Lord. He made Paradise the reward for the keeping and fulfilling of that pledge.

Ibn Ishaq said: I have been told by `Ubadah ibn al-Walid ibn `Ubadah ibn al-Samit on the authority of his father al-Walid, on the authority of his grandfather `Ubadah ibn al-Samit, who was one of the Nuqaba' [deputies], that: The Messenger of Allah, upon him be peace, has taken from us the Pledge of War. `Ubadah was one of the Twelve Nuqaba' who had taken the `Pledge of Women' at the, first `Aqaba that we obey the Prophet in times of hardship and times of ease, (to fulfil any undertaking irrespective of whether we like or hate it, even against our self-interest). We shall not contest the authority of those in charge, and we say the truth wherever we are, not fearing when obeying Allah, the censure of anyone.

Further evidence that the Aws and Khazraj tribes of Yathrib were committing themselves to fight in defence of the Prophet and the oppressed Muslims of Makka is provided by a statement made by one of their leaders, namely al-`Abbas ibn Ubadah ibn Nadlah al-Ansari. During the enactment of the second 'Aqaba pledge, when the Yathribite delegation of eighty-three men and women were about to enter the phase of handshaking (an act signalling official conclusion of the pledge), he reminded everyone

that they were giving a solemn pledge to wage war against whoever happened to oppose Muhammad, `be they red or black';

and that if they doubted their ability to honour the pledge when their lives were endangered or their money or property threatened, then they should be wise enough not to make it. However, the delegation was wholeheartedly adamant in its determination both tomake and to honour that commitment at any cost, whether to their lives or their property.

They then went on to give a reassuring demonstration of their resolve to honour the defence pact. As soon as the handshaking was completed, they asked permission of the Prophet to make a raid against the Quraysh, the chief oppressors of the Muslims. But the Prophet calmed them, saying that he had not as yet received any order or permission to wage war.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 5.232        Narrated byUbada bin As Samit
Who had taken part in the battle of Badr with Allah's Apostle and had been amongst his companions on the night of Al-'Aqaba Pledge: Allah's Apostle, surrounded by a group of his companions said, "Come along and give me the pledge of allegiance that you will not worship anything besides Allah, will not steal, will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, will not kill your children, will not utter slander invented by yourself, and will not disobey me if I order you to do something good. Whoever among you will respect and fulfill this pledge, will be rewarded by Allah. And if one of you commits any of these sins and is punished in this world then that will be his expiation for it, and if one of you commits any of these sins and Allah screens his sin, then his matter, will rest with Allah: If He will, He will punish him and if He will,. He will excuse him." So I gave the pledge of allegiance to him for these conditions.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 5.233        Narrated byUbada bin As Samit
I was one of the Naqibs who gave the ('Aqaba) Pledge of Allegiance to Allah's Apostle . We gave the pledge of allegiance to him that we would not worship anything other than Allah, would not steal, would not commit illegal sexual intercourse, would not kill a person whose killing Allah has made illegal except rightfully, would not rob each other, and we would not be promised Paradise if we did the above sins, then if we committed one of the above sins, Allah will give His Judgment concerning it.
